Synopsis

Hitori Gotou, nicknamed “Bocchi,” is a painfully shy high school girl who spends her days alone, practicing guitar in her room. Despite her talent—she uploads videos online under the alias “GuitarHero”—she has no real-life friends. One day, she’s invited by Nijika Ijichi to join her band, “Kessoku Band,” setting the stage for Bocchi’s journey of self-discovery, friendship, and musical growth. Through quirky comedy and heartfelt moments, the anime follows Bocchi as she tries to overcome social anxiety and find her place in the world.

Main Characters

  • Hitori Gotou (“Bocchi”) – The socially anxious guitarist. Despite her online popularity as a solo performer, she has zero confidence in real life. Joins Kessoku Band as lead guitarist.
  • Ijichi Nijika – The cheerful and outgoing drummer who brings Bocchi into the band. Acts as the group’s leader and emotional anchor.
  • Yamada Ryo – The aloof bassist. Talented but often broke due to her obsession with music gear. Her dry humor and deadpan personality contrast well with others.
  • Kita Ikuyo – The band’s charismatic vocalist and rhythm guitarist. Initially a newbie, she quickly catches up through effort and adds a lively spark to the group.

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
  • Top-tier animation and visual direction—especially during emotional breakdowns and live performances.
  • High-quality music—original rock songs tie into character arcs and are performed by the in-anime band, adding authenticity and depth.
  • Excellent voice acting—particularly Bocchi’s VA, Yoshino Aoyama, whose range captures everything from whispery nerves to explosive meltdowns.
  • Bocchi’s extreme social anxiety may be uncomfortable or unrelatable for some viewers, especially early on.
  • The story follows a fairly standard coming-of-age/band formation arc—nothing revolutionary in terms of plot twists.
  • Only 12 episodes—leaves viewers wanting more character development and band progression.
